Introduction
Nottingham is a historic market town situated in the heart of England. It has been an important settlement for over 1,000 years and was granted its city charter by King Charles I in 1642. The first mention of Nottinghamshire is found in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle which records that it was captured from the Britons by Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great, after a siege on 2 November 867. Parks around Nottingham The city of Nottingham has many beautiful parks that are perfect for family outings. One of the most popular is Jubilee Park, which was created in 1906 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The park includes a children's playground and an open-air theatre. Another great park in this area is Wollaton Hall Park, which features expansive lawns and lovely gardens with plenty of places to relax on a sunny day. Getting around Nottingham If you're looking for transport in Nottingham, there are a number of different options available to suit your needs. The first type is public transport which includes buses, trams and trains that can take you anywhere within the city or even outside it! If this doesn't sound like what you need then taxis and minicabs may be an option too - these will generally be more expensive than bus or train travel but they are quick and convenient if needed. Robin Hood Tales and Folklore Sherwood Forest is best known for its role as the setting of Robin Hood's adventures with his band of merry men including Little John, Friar Tuck and Maid Marian among others. The tales relate to how he robbed from the rich (especially tax collectors) to give back to poor people living thereabouts. Some historians believe that this was not just an entertaining story but may have had roots in real events during medieval times. Top Ten Sightseeing in Nottingham Old market square Nottingham's vibrant city centre boasts several important tourist attractions. It's here that you'll find Old Market Square, the largest such public space in England and home to the Nottingham Tourism Centre, an important first stop before exploring the city. On the east side of the square is the Neoclassical Council House, crowned by a large dome. The impressive Guildhall is also close nearby and well worth a visit. Old Lace Market. The Lace Market area is the most historic part of Nottingham, with evidence as early as 5th and 6th century settlements found around Belward Street near the site of Motorpoint Arena Nottingham and National Ice Centre. This dates back before Norman invaders arrived to take control in 1066 AD when Saxons had their own kingdom within this region. The word ‘Gate’ originated from Danish language meaning street which was eventually shortened by Normans after they took over England following conquest during that time period. Visiting Nottingham Castle. The first castle was built in 1067 and just three years later it had been rebuilt from wood to stone. The stronghold of kings and queens for centuries, Nottingham Castle has seen many battles fought around its walls as the rulers tried to extend their power across England.
